Assess verbal learning and memory deficits
The CVLT-C assesses verbal learning through an everyday memory task in which the child is asked to recall a list. An interference task is given, followed by short-delay free recall and cued recall trials. Free recall, cued recall and a word recognition trial are also administered after a 20-minute delay. In this way, CVLT-C generates measures of short- and long-term memory performance, including 8 recall and 4 recognition measures. It also provides data on encoding strategies and errors, such as intrusions and perseveration, together with indicating the degree to which stimuli may interfere with already learnt material, thus providing the clinician with a profile of learning characteristics.
It can be used in a variety of settings to identify learning and memory difficulties, to isolate deficient learning strategies and to assist in designing remediation programs. Furthermore, since it has be co-normed with the children\’s category test (CCT), it allows clinicians to compare a child\’s memory and learning performance with higher executive functioning.
