Level of Service Inventory – Revised: Screening Version (LSI-R) Don. Andrews, PhD & James L. Bonta, PhD

The LSI-R is a quantitative survey of attributes of offenders and their situations. Relevant to the level of supervision and treatment decisions for persons aged 16 years and older, the LSI-R helps predict parole outcome, success in correctional halfway houses, institutional misconducts, and recidivism. The questions used are based on legal requirements and include relevant factors needed for making decisions about risk and treatment.

The LSI-R samples both risk and needs, and the item content reflects the “big four” risk factors:

  • Criminal history
  • Criminal attitudes
  • Criminal associates
  • Antisocial personality pattern

The LSI-R Manual contains complete information on the use of the LSI-R as well as a summary of research studies that have documented its reliability and validity. The LSI-R Interview Guide provides a protocol that has been found to be effective in obtaining the information required for the practitioner to complete the Answer Form and plot the scores, which enables you to quickly decide the appropriate level of service.

AREAS OF APPLICATION

  • The LSI-R can be used by probation and parole officers and correctional workers at jails, detention facilities, and correctional halfway houses.
  • It can be used to provide a convenient record of factors to be reviewed as a quantitative decision aid in case classification and to assist in allocation of resources.
  • LSI-R results can be used to help you make decisions regarding probation and placement into halfway houses and make appropriate security level classifications.
