Self-Directed Search Form E: 4th Edition (SDSE)
John L. Holland, PhD
- Purpose: Assess career interests among individuals with limited reading skills
- Age Range: Adolescent, Adult
- Adminitration: Individual or group
- Time: 35-45 minutes
Revised and updated based on Form E user feedback, this version more closely reflects the interests of individuals at lower educational levels. This 4th edition of Form E includes the following changes:
- The 198-item Assessment Booklet contains 77 new and 33 revised items, written at a 6th-grade reading level.
- The directions are written at a 4th-grade reading level in larger print for easier reading.
- The "Rating Your Abilities" section is now in a Likert-type format, which is much easier to complete.
- The revised Jobs Finder represents current industrial and occupational trends and focuses on job requirements that more closely match the vocational aspirations of individuals with limited reading ability.
- The Jobs Finder lists over 860 jobs, including some requiring postsecondary training, with prompts and cues to encourage full vocational exploration. These jobs have been updated to reflect the 1996 edition of the Dictionary of Holland Occupational Codes (DHOC).
The Form E Assessment Booklet includes uncomplicated questions about individuals' likes and dislikes, their competencies, the jobs they find interesting, and their personal abilities. After answering the questions, individuals derive a 2-letter Summary Code (instead of the usual 3-letter code) using a simplified scoring system. With this code, they search The Jobs Finder for jobs with matching or similar codes–jobs that will be most satisfying to them.
The Jobs Finder lists each job with its appropriate Summary Code, the required level of education, and the Dictionary of Occupational Titles (DOT) code. The booklet entitled You and Your Job gives clients additional insight into their potential job paths.
Other SDS resources are fully compatible with SDS Form E. The Leisure Activities Finder helps users find satisfying activities for their free time. And when you need to help a student or client do further job-related research, the 3rd edition of the Dictionary of Holland Occupational Codes (DHOC) is available.
SDS Form E Introductory Kit includes SDS Professional User's Guide, Technical Manual, 25 Assessment Booklets, 25 Jobs Finders, and 25 You and Your Job Booklets.
